Dr Walters Nsoh
Dr Walters Nsoh is an Associate Professor of Law at Alfaisal University. He is also an Honorary Associate Professor at the Durban University of Technology and a Senior Fellow with the Institute for Oil, Gas, Energy, Environment and Sustainable Development, Nigeria. Prior to joining Alfaisal University, he held teaching positions at the University of Birmingham, Anglia Ruskin University, University of Dundee and the University of Surrey, all in the United Kingdom. He has also served as a Visiting Professor in Environmental Law at prestigious institutions, including the College of Law, Hamad Bin Khalifa University in Qatar and the Faculty of Law, Business and Economics, University of Bayreuth in Germany. He has been a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA), now known as Advance HE in the United Kingdom since 2015. Dr Nsoh holds a PhD in Law from the University of Surrey and an LLM (with Distinction) in Environmental Law and Policy from the University of Kent, United Kingdom. He is a former Commonwealth Scholar (2005-2006) and plays an active part in the environmental law community, including roles as an Associate Editor of the Journal of Sustainable Development Law and Policy. He is a former Commonwealth Scholar (2005-2006) and has published in academic and practitioner sources on the regulation and governance of ecosystems and natural resources. His book The Privatisation of Biodiversity? - New Approaches to Conservation Law (Edward Elgar Publishing 2016) explores the use of innovative market-based approaches such as biodiversity offsetting, payment for ecosystem services and conservation covenants in nature conservation. He is regularly invited to peer review on behalf of leading journals in this area including Environmental Law Review, Review of European, Comparative & International Environmental Law, Journal of African Law, Journal of Property, Planning and Environmental Law, The Extractive Industries and Society, and the Journal of Sustainable Development Law and Policy. He has also reviewed book proposals for Routledge and manuscripts for Cambridge University Press and Oxford University Press. Dr Nsoh regularly provides written evidence to policy consultations and advises the government on environmental policy matters. He has served as a member of Social Science Expert Panel, providing vital advice on and scrutiny of science and evidence work (particularly around Sustainable Development) of the Natural England (a Non-Departmental Government Body) Science Advisory Committee since 2021.
